I was very sad to hear that comic legend Gene Colan has died at the age of 84. Gene was always in my opinion one of the greatest artist to ever work in comics. His art for Daredevil, Tomb Of Dracula and Howard The Duck alone is insane. Gene was a nice guy and cool enough to do art for my first album HELLBILLY DELUXE.
In the early 90's Gene did the art for a White Zombie comic featuring both Drac and Howard, but unfortunately the book was never published for some reason.
Below are a few pages of the amazing art he did for me.
holy crossroads
ReplyDeleteR.I.P Gene Colan
ReplyDeleteMr. Colan's Marvel Silver Age contributions alone are astounding. But what is dearest to my heart are the DC Nathaniel Dusk miniseries from the mid-80s. I was 11 years old when I encountered these and this was my first realization that comics could reach beyond the supernatural and really ignited an obsession with throwback noir that lasts to this day. R.I.P., Gene Colan - what a legacy!
ReplyDeleteAlso loved the Phantom Zone miniseries he did, one of the greatest Superman stories ever. And I've described his Night Force series that he did for DC as working in the Rob Zombie vein, so this seems so appropriate. These pages are great. The funny thing is, I have yet to read Tomb of Dracula, despite the fact I'm also a huge fan of Marv Wolfman, I guess I've been saving it. RIP Gene Colan
ReplyDeleteHI, R.I.P GENE COLAN!! GREAT PAGES. ALL HAIL!
ReplyDeleteWow, I'd never seen these... thanks for sharing them!
ReplyDeleteI was truly saddened by this news. Tomb of Dracula was one of my favorite comics growing up! One of the few that featured a villain in the lead role, and had him facing off against all sorts of cool characters (Blade made his debut in those very pages). For me, what made Colan's work so wonderful, whether he was doing monsters or superheroes, was his sense of movement. The characters conveyed action in a way that few artists can capture. His influence is apparent in SO many artists working today. In my mind, he belongs on a comics Mt. Rushmore, alongside greats like Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr. and Steve Ditko.
ReplyDeleteBTW, those pages you posted are incredible! If there is more...please share it here!!!! Love it!!!
ReplyDeletetruely a remarkable artist.. RIP Gene
